OK though I am starting to post more reviews please do not feel you all cant do the same. Many of us, myself included, are busy and do not remotely have the time to test watch even a percentage of the shows, movies or play games that come out. As a community of like minds your experiences with something could help others enjoy or stay away from it. So post your reviews or critique mine, be heard!
Ok Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica spin off. Let me start by saying I was leery of the redo but BSG was one of the new generation of remakes that take the content seriously and give it its due. BSG was very well done and ended prematurely in my opinion but such is the way of special effects heavy shows. As such, we are given the less special effects heavy show Caprica.
As with BSG I was dubious on this show, almost didnt watch it but BSG was so good I had to give it a shot. The short and sweet of it is the origins of the Cylons, and a pretty unique take on it at that. I had to laugh when the test cylon said "By your command." On the other hand, I wanted to punch someone for the creation of the awkward shorthand (Cylon = Cybernetic Lifeform Node or something like that).
Overall I like the show and will continue to watch the season as time permits. Good character development. Two grieving fathers trying connect with their lost daughters. Both flawed. Already playing ith the righteous doing unrighteous things and the morally dubious being the moral foundation. Couple of annoying characters you would love to see blownup and questions on the agendas of the characters. So enough to hook you. However, one major thing I find in the show that annoys the hell out of me and is becoming a disturbing trend: Making scifi sexy.
Shows like Caprica, Stargate Universe, BSG even and several shows I wont watch but seen to follow the same theory like Vampire Diaries, are basically bringing in plots and hamhanded sexually laden writing. Take shows like, though I have never scene but can guess at from the commercials, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, and others and set them in space or in a fantasy world. I get the tactic, its to bring in tween girls and girls/women are becoming a huge force in scifi/fantasy shows. Its not just for geek boys anymore However, what I am talking about is just garbage writing.
Sex scenes, gay/lesbian relationships, and so are not being put in because the story flows in that direction but rather for the shock of it. It feels forced. It takesaway from the quality/depth of the characters. We have matured as a society, even for tweens, that gay/lesbian relationships shouldnt be thrown in to show how avant-garde the show is but rather as just a natural extension of the characters. As for the sex scenes, sorry, if thats what I am looking for there is far better on the internet with every spectrum of activity that tickles the fancy. Jamming sex scenes or even hot and heavy passion scenes is just a way to save money and make up for lazy writing.
Anyway, on a scale of -10 to 10 on the sicness scale, (-10 being anyone involved in the show should be taken out back and whipped with a dung covered whip to +10 being I recommend it to you, your friends, random passerbys on the street and I am going out to by a show based teeshirt) I would give Caprica a 6 right now, a should watch. This is subject to change as the show progresses. First seasons are the builder phase so and it could go either up or down as the season progresses.
